If you’re in the market for professional SEO services, you’ll have noticed that, like many other professions, our charges vary wildly! There’s a good reason for this, and in general, you get what you pay for.

Today I was busy spying out the competition. I recommend that everyone does this from time-to-time, especially if you’re  trying to improve your search engine ranking. Enter your primary search term into a search engine and take a look at the first few sites that come up (hopefully you’ll be up there somewhere).

I wonder if anyone else has this problem: I’m so used to working virtually that I’ve become reluctant to crawl out of my electronic shell and get on the phone! Heaven forbid actually meet people in person! In sixteen years, I’ve actually met with less than twenty of my clients. My work allows for this.

You may have noticed that I haven’t posted for a while. Actually I’ve been away on vacation. A comlete break with no Internet connection whatsoever. It was good for my personal life, but not-so-good for business. I’m frantically struggling to catch up, and hope that by next week I’ll be back in my stride.

Where are the hecklers? If you’d like to discuss a subject on here with me, leave a comment and we’ll get into it! :)

We live in an age when everything tends to be faster than it was in the past. Speed is of the essence, most of the time. So when it comes to doing things that take up our valuable time, and are a bit boring too, many of us kid ourselves that there is a faster, better way, and we don’t need to bother with it.A

A classic example of this is submitting to the online directories. Again and again consultants advise their clients that getting listed in as many online directories as possible is critical, particularly if you want a good Google ranking, yet few pay any attention tothis.

I challenge you to submit your website to 20 online directories, wait a month, and tell me your Googlepagerankk hasn’t improved.

Oh, and if you can’t find a list of twenty directories, just drop me a line and I’ll send you a list. :)

Pay Per Click V. Organic SEO

There has been a trend in some circles to accept Pay Per Click as the solution to the problem of how to get traffic to your website. The current difficulties regarding Pay Per Click rates, along with widespread Pay Per Click fraud mean that many are rethinking this position.

Have you noticed that when you do a search, you click on the organic results on the left rather than the paid ads to the right? I’m assuming you do that, because a whopping 60 percent of the time this is the case. Coupled with the likelihood that if you choose Pay Per Click, you’re going to come up agains fraud at some time or another, I think that good, solid SEO practices are far better than Pay Per Click. I see pay per click as a supplement to, rather than the answer to achieving good ranking. In the end, once you’ve achieved your SEO goals through the services of a good SEO copywriter and other methods, you’ll be able to disregard PPC once the wheels are in motion. You’ll be getting your traffic at no cost whatsoever!

My Biggest SEO Mistake…

Was leaving my website in the care of someone else. Granted, that person knew a lot about HTML and other markup languages. But she was not clued in about SEO and how to make a website attractive to the search engines.

Because I was spending a lot of time writing, I had no room in my schedule for my website. I thought it was “secondary.” I only realized quite late in the game that I’d made a big mistake. The damage done by my erstwhile webmaster has taken me two full years to repair, and even now I’m still not where I feel I should be. :(
Starting out I had a Google page rank of 3–that was in the beginning before I had acquired SEO skills. Now, for two years I have had a page rank of 2 for my home page, when all my other pages are ranked 4!

Who knows what insults Google perceived from clumsy website creation.

Now I know better. I’d never leave my websites in the care of someone else. If I don’t have time to do something, then it simply waits until I’m free. Doing nothing is better than doing the wrong thing as far as SEO is concerned.
