Ever notice that the images that google news displays to the left of the text are usually not from the headlines located to the right? The images serve as link as a link to a completely different article. In my mind, the leftmost link is the highest ranked story (perhaps I'm offbase here) and a good deal of the time it's an image link. That tells me that google must value images very highly and it must be part of their algorithm somewhere i.e. the best looking image doesn't get ranked higher.
